Ashoka Fellow, USA · HSBC Climate Hero, Bangladesh
Freedom fighter, social worker and the founding force of RUSTIC — leading since 1988.
Born in 1951 at Bailtali village, Fakirhat, Bagerhat, Moral Noor Mohammad earned a bachelor's degree in social science in 1970 and joined the Liberation War in 1971. From 1972 to 1987 he worked as a social activist across the south-west coast, and in 1988 the group he built emerged as RUSTIC.
Under his leadership RUSTIC pioneered door-to-door waste management and organic compost production in Khulna, vermiculture to conserve snail biodiversity, biogas plants in rural homes, cage culture of freshwater lobster post-larvae, and support for climate-refugee girls migrating to urban slums. His recognition includes the Ashoka Fellowship (USA), HSBC Climate Hero Award (Bangladesh), the NONA FISHER CORNERSTONE Award (Winrock International, USA) and the Paribesh Padak environment award (Bangladesh).
